Austin Dillon went for arguably the wildest ride of his Sprint Cup career on the final lap of Sunday’s Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway, landing upside down in among the most frightening wrecks in NASCAR history.
Dillon was part of a huge multicar wreck coming to the checkered flag that sent his car airborne into the catchfence, tearing it apart.
Dillon’s No. 3 Chevrolet car was destoryed, with the front and rear ends missing after it came to a stop on its roof at the end of the pits (and after another jarring collision with Brad Keselowski‘s No. 2 Ford). The impact threw Dillon’s engine into the grass, several feet behind the car.
After safety workers and crew members from other teams scrambled to Dillion’s car, the Richard Childress Racing driver was extricated from the wreckage. Dillon gave a few waves to the crowd, removed his helmet and HANS device and walked to a waiting ambulance. He was treated and released from the infield care center with a bruised forearm and tailbone.
